an the muscles that hold his shoulders in position gain 1 See Appendix, Note 10. 272 THE POSTURE OF SCHOOL CHILDREN in strength. The growing period thus becomes a time of con-tinual readjustment, and it is no wonder that the awkward boyor girl knows not what to do with arms and feet, or that he orshe fails to estabHsh habits of erect carriage. The physical basis of education continually receives fullerattention. The need for including in this physical care definitetraining in erect posture has been but feebly stated in this volumeif its importance as a fundamental requisite to health and physicalstamina has not been made clear. The time will undoubtedlycome when tests for a childs physical condition will outrank inimportance any other tests in his education; and it is certainlyas practicable at this time to ask if he stands correctly, and ifnot, why not, as to find out why he goes slowly through the grades,or what peculiarity of mind causes him to stumble over prob-lems in arithmetic.

Walker Plate XXVII. — Lyric Poetry. (Detail from mural decoration in Congressional Library, Washington, D.C. Copy-right by H. O. Walker. From a Copley Print, copyright by Curtis andCameron) CHAPTER XXVI ERECT CARRIAGE AS AN EXPRESSION OF INTELLIGENCE AND CHARACTER That a person standing erect looks to be more intelligent andenergetic than one in poor posture, needs no argument; it isself-evident. Under this appearance, giving it reality, Kes thebiological fact that the erect position has been coincident withthe development of the brain (cerebrum) as it exists in man. While the muscular action necessary for maintaining erect pos-ture is chiefly controlled by the unconscious ^erve centers in thecerebellum and spinal cord, the acquirement of this posture byboth the individual and the race is largely the result of directeffort by higher brain centers.^ That brain development or brain condition bears a directrelation to the erect position, becomes apparent when one con-siders the collapse
