In hisFolio MS., he says, was an old poem, on this subject,in a wretched corrupt state, unworthy the press : fromwhich were taken such particulars as could beadopted.In all probability, however, the ballad, as it stands, is tolooked upon as the composition of Dr. Percy him-self, particularly as there is appended to it the mark bywhich ore distinguished those ballads with which consi-derable liberties had been taken. * The old story-bookof Valentine and Orson (which suggested the plan ofthe tale, but is not strictly followed in it,) was origin-ally/ says Percy, a translation from the French,being one of their earliest attempts at romance. Thecircumstance of the bridge of bells is taken from theold metrical legend of Sir John Eeviss and has also beencopied in the Sevm Ckampi&ns.
