The abrasion test, as performed in the Deval abrasion machine,tests the hardness as well as the toughness of rock, and much valu-able information has been obtained on the wearing qualities of rocksince this test was originated in the French School of Bridgesand Roads. ABRASION MACHINE (DEVAL TYPE). The Deval machine (see fig. 11) consists essentially of the pulley A(or worm gear and motor, direct connected, as used at present) drivingthe shaft BB, upon which are mounted the four cast-iron cylinders CCCCin such a way that the axes of the cylinders are inclined at an angleof 30° with the axis of rotation.
