ngthened. In 1855, he was promoted lieutenant-colonelof the Second Cavalry, and in the spring of the next year hejoined his regiment in Avestern Texas. Pursuit of maraud-ing Indians and study of animals and plants employed hishours, but he suffered from his separation from his wife andchildren, domestic affection being as characteristic a trait ashis genius for battle. In July, 1857, the command of hisregiment devolved upon him, and three months later he wascalled to Arlington on account of the death of his father-in-law, Mr. Custis.
