Having fought through the Mexican War. he resigned from the army in 1853.On May 17. 1861, he was appointed brigadier-general of volunteers, and on May .>. lS(>->. major-general of volunteers. He was activethroughout the Peninsular campaign, and at Bristol- Station. Second Bull Kim. (hantilly. South Mountain and Antietam.
