May 5th, the still-ness was broken by the rattleof musketry and the roar ofartillery, which told that War-ren had met with resistance onthe turnpike and that thebattle had begun. Nearly amile were Ewells men drivenback, and then they came mag-nificently on again, fightingfvu-iously in the smoke-filledthickets with Warrens nowretreating troops. Sedgwick,coming to the support ofWarren, renewed the conflict.To the southward on the plankroad, Gettys division, of theSixth Corps, hard pressed bythe forces of A. P. Hill, wassuccored by Hancock with theSecond Corps, and togetherthese commanders achievedwhat seemed success. It wasbrief; Longstreet was close athand to save the day for theConfederates.
