In this way, several editions of eleven maps werearranged and issued, comprising surveys covering an area ofseven hundred and thirty square miles. These were also cor-rected by instruments carried by the supply train and by mapscaptured from the Confederates. Before the army started from its winter quarters on thenorth of the Rapidan, in the spring of 18(>4<, for the last greatcampaign, there had been twelve hundred maps made andissued. After the start, and before the end of the siege ofPetersburg, about sixteen hundred were issued from newsurveys. In addition to the duties of surveying the country andmaking and distributing maps, the officers of the corps werecharged with the work of selecting positions and directingtheir fortification.
