One hour beforenoon on June 15th, General Ben-ham received orders to prepare apontoon-bridge across the JamesRiver for the passage of the entirearmy. In anticipation of this order,pontoons had been sent from FortMonroe, and the work was startedunder Major Duane. General Ben-ham reported to General Meade atthe position selected, and was di-rected to proceed at once with theconstruction. General Meade smiledat the enthusiasm of Benham whenhe remarked that he would notsleep till the bridge was finished.About five and a half hours afterBenhams arrival, a telegram was re-ceived from General Meade inquir-ing about the progress of the work.The indefatigable engineer was ableto reply thai the last bolt was inposition, and that the troops couldbegin to move when they wished.
