Many of these menwere taken in the North whiletraveling from city to city.When they were recognizedas Southerners who had ut-tered secession sentiments,they were quietly taken fromthe trains, put in charge of aprovost-guard, and trans-ported to Fort Warren orsome similar Federal prison.

Nostalgia (homesickness) occasionallyappears on the surgeons reports as the cause of death of a pris-oner, but there can be no question that it was a contributingcause in many cases attributed to other diseases. Where the prisoners were educated men with resources inthemselves, they struggled bravely to keep up their courage,for if this were lost their chances of survival were lessened. TheConfederate officers at Johnsons Island had debating societies,classes in French, dancing, and music; they organized a govern-ment and debated and raised questions in their House of Rep-resentatives. The same sort of thing went on at Libby and atother places, and some of the discussions given in the books ofreminiscences are exceedingly interesting.
