Description

the premier monastery of the state, not the oldest but certainly the most prestigious and esteemed.

the pemayangtse monastery serves as the headquaters of the nyingmapa sect in sikkim. the stand out attraction of the monastery is the seven tiered all wooden carving of the heavenly palace of guru rinpoche "Santopalri". the structure appeared to the late Dungzin Rinpoche in a dream and was completed by him, single-handendly, over a span of five years (1970-1975 i think)
