Even if there be some poetry mingled here with the gravity of his-torical description, it is evident that the general beauty and fertility of thecountry were once very great, and especially when contrasted with its presentaspect. These shores were then the seat of populous cities and villages, whoseinhabitants were blest with prosperity and plenty. The lake was alive with alittle fleet of fishing and ferry boats, which drew up the treasures out of itspure waters, or conveyed the inhabitants, with the merchandise of an inlandcommerce, between the thriving villages and towns upon the coast. Here stoodthe cities of Chorazin and Bethsaida, and here Capernaum, by the pride of itsinhabitants, seemed to be exalted to heaven. Here the Son of Man foundmultitudes to hear and thousands to disregard His message, and few followerssave those whom He chose, as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, from thehumble ranks of the fishermen.
