It is difficult to determinewhether these tumors start from the periosteum or from the connectivetissue of the bone. They do not infiltrate the bone to which they areattached, but cause pressure-atrophy and distortion of the bone. The tumor represented on Plate lo (Fig. i) occurred in a man twenty FIBROMA. Enormous fibroma of the upper maxilla. 2. Showing condition of parts immediately after excisionof the tumor. FIBROMA. 395 years of age, and was first discovered when he was ten years old. In1890 it was only partially removed through a small incision. Twoyears before the operation the patient consulted a prominent surgeon,who pronounced it a sarcoma and refused to operate. When the patientcame under the writers observation the tumor had become very promi-nent in the cavity of the mouth—so much so that deglutition and speechwere greatly affected. The tumor was removed, through the incisionshown on Plate 10 (Fig. 2), by enucleation, without any special diffi-culty. The wound healed promptly, leaving a deep depression in theright cheek, where the tumor had been most prominent. No recurrencehad taken place two years after the operation.
