, much to our surprise, thatanother European was ahead of us. We event-ually overtook him, and found he was Dr Bell-inger, the Spanish physician, who had formerlybeen up in Fez with Abdul Aziz. He had comefrom Larache, starting two days after I had left,but had overtaken us because he had not stoppedat Alcazar. We quickly made friends and joinedforces, and made the rest of the journey together.Dr Bellinger had an excellent cook, which addedgreatly to our comfort, and for the remainder ofthe journey we lived extremely well. That nightwe camped at the Warga river, at a large villagebearing the same name. Here the people werenot so friendly ; but the Caid, who knew Carleton,made us very welcome, and offered the customarygift of a sheep, chickens, eggs, sugar, and tea.We had only been in camp a short time whenthe villagers informed us that another Europeanwas approaching, and what was our surprise tohave Bibi Carleton ride up, accompanied by thetwo soldiers whom we had met on the road. THE CAID OF WARGA. 225 told us he had received a letter from Moulai elHafid, urging him to come to Fez immediately, as hewished to consult him on many important matters.The Warga river is a fine broad stream, and evenat this season of the year was fairly full. Weall went and had a delightful bathe, which wasbadly needed after the heat and fatigue of thedays march. When the news spread through thesurrounding country that the great Bibi Carletonwas in Warga, the Caids and headmen flockedfrom the neighbouring villages to pay theirrespects to him, and to have, what the Moorslove more than anything else, a long palaver.That evening we had a great reunion in Bibistent. Rabat carpets were placed on the ground,and mattresses and pillows ranged round in acircle. On these we reclined, and had cup aftercup of tea served to us. The Arabs are greatstory-tellers, and I heard many interesting talesof the events of the past two years that even-ing. Some were sad, some were tragic, andothers comic,—
