I -^ THE MAR CHIC A. 401 natioual aims. Spains ambition was to create agreat mercantile harbour on a short road to theinterior of Morocco and to Fez. The preHminaryworks towards the construction of a harbour atMeUlla were not encouraging. There is want ofdepth in the roads, and the wash of the Mediter-ranean from the north-west is very strong—andso the harbour works staff turned their attentionto the Mar Chica. This little inland sea is about26 kilometres in length from north to south-east,and sweeps south in a rough semicircle, of whichthe radius from the middle of its northern shoreis about 13 kilometres. It is known in two divi-sions,—the south and south - eastern section iscalled El-Jezireh. It is much the larger of thetwo, and washes the northern boundary of theZeluan plain, till it curls by Nador up toAtalayon, which marks its division from thesmaller but deeper area of Sebka-bu-Areh. Itis cut off from the Mediterranean by a sand andgravel bar varying from 500 to 600 metres
