Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe parish church of St. Mary the Virgin, Upchurch - geograph.org.uk - 1602601.jpg |
English: The parish church of St. Mary the Virgin, Upchurch Edmund Drake, father of Sir Francis Drake, was vicar of Upchurch in 1560 for six years. According to Arthur Mee, he is buried here with one of his eleven sons, Edward. He fled from Devon to escape religious persecution when Francis was already at sea in his teens. He must have passed a few miles from his father's grave in the Golden Hind on his voyage round the world. |
