tcrater, rising in a circular form to a height ofalmost five hundred feet, with the town and itssuburbs at its base. From this sightly spot thesurrounding country, from Diamond Head on theeast to Pearl River on the west, is spread out likea panorama. The most popular resort of the island is thefamous Waikiki, the Long Branch of Honolulu.Here are fine private residences, picturesquecottages, cool and delicious groves of cocoanut-trees which were the favourite resort of earlykings; in the background the corrugated moun-tain range; in front, the wide crescent beach, onehorn tipped by the red crag of Diamond Headerand the other by the opal tints of Waianaerange ; outside the emerald sea, dancing, sparkling,inviting all to its soothing embrace. There areattractive bath-houses, and ocean bathing herehas none of the chill freshness of a New Englandatmosphere. There is no fairer beach, no smootherbottom, no clearer water than at Waikiki, and,what is better, every one seems to catch the spirit
