ams leaping in cascadesfrom the overhanging cliffs. With few exceptionsthe mountainsides are clothed in dense growthsof temperate zone sturdiness, while the lowlandsabound with a tropical vegetation of a perpetualgreen. Evidence of the volcanic origin of these islandsexists on every hand, from the dead and buriedcones of Kauai to the living fires of Hawaii. Bythis it will be observed that the former, as wellas being the most northerly, is the oldest of theseries. This theory is supported by the fact thatonly two cones remain on this isle, and these onthe southeastern slope. All others have beendestroyed by the march of years, and their slopescovered with dense forests. The land havingundergone longer change, is more arable, the soildeeper, and the vegetation more bountiful than onthe other islands. Encircled by beaches of silverybrightness, with valleys and hillsides painted bynatures brush a green that never fades, Kauai isthe Garden Isle. Lying in a westerly direction, about fifteen
Text Appearing After Image:
THE ISLAND WONDEBLANB. 15 miles distant^ is Niihau^ resembling it in physicalfeatures. This island is sparsely settled^ its in-habitants being noted for the manufacture of matsmade from a sort of rush which grows only on thisisland and Kauai, and for the cultivation of yam, growing almost exclusively here. Taura, southwest from Kauai, is a barren rock, which is the resort of innumerable aquatic birds, whose eggs are sometimes sought by the inhabitantsof the windward islands. Oahu, the following island on the southeasterlycourse, produces more recent and numerous indica-tions of its volcanic formation; but here are valleysof great fertility, and a mountain range of ruggedappearance. On account of its fine harbour atHonolulu, it is known as the Mistress of theSea. Maui, next in order, attests its younger age, having several craters, the largest and highest ofwhich is Haleakala, the house of the sun, which lifts its bulky crest ten thousand feet intothe air, being the largest extinct volcano
