With a feeling of friend-liness toward all foreign countries, England andthe United States in particular, he thought itsufficient to fly the flags of these countries as ithappened, intending, no doubt, to be fair in thematter. All went well in this way until the Warof 1812 had been in progress several months.Then a Yankee privateer, putting into Honolulu,saw with amazement the British flag floating inthe breeze. He demanded an explanation, whenthe king, to prove his friendliness, caused thestars and stripes to be run ap in place of the otherflag. This satisfied the American, but in a shorttime an English man-of-war appeared on the scene,and again the king was taken to account.
