andlV. In drawing a full length figure, it is also necessary to beaware of the natural proportions and relations of the severalparts to each other. Jhe human figure is usually divided intoeight or ten equal parts; and in drawing it, these divisions aremarked, or supposed to be marked, on a line passing down themiddle of the figure when in an upright position. In the eight-fold division, the head occupies the first division, and there-fore the whole figure is said to be divided into heads. In thetenfold division, which is called dividing the figure by faces,the first division extends from the crown of the head to theunder lip, and proceeding downwards, the seventh divisionfalls exactly on the benc\ of the knee; and from thence to thebottom of the heel takes up the remaining three. The heightof a well-proportioned figure, is equal to^the extent betweenthe tips of the middle fingers, when the arms and hands arefully stretched out in a line.
