The desire to push forwardand grasp the whole art at once is not the properway to succeed, and the longer the student is inthe primary class the more proficient he willbecome. The designs have now become suffi-ciently interesting for an extended amount ofpractice, and we desire to have the student inventMs oivn patterns, these Figs. 128, 129 and 130,being simply to show what can be done with theinformation imparted in the three lessons alreadygiven. Lesson 4.—There are a thousand peculiar shapesand forms constituting scrolls. The learnershould choose one or two standard designs andpractice on these until he makes them perfectly, then, add new features as he improves. Eachcurved line of a scroll must be an easy and grace-ful sweep, and harmony of design must also be verycarefully attended to. For instance, if the designis intended for a centre-piece, circles of the largest

The same rule is applic-able to a corner pattern, and a close observationof such work made by an experienced hand will atonce clearly define the idea we wish to convey. This balance of proportions is by many begin-ners entirely everlooked, and if so, no matter howwell the painting- may be done the result will bein the eyes of a connoisseur a failure. The parts which make up a scroll pattern shouldbe connected, or at least touch each other, andnot as we frequently see them, remain disjointed,or completely isolated from the parent stem. The copying- from frescoed or engraved ara-besques not expressly designed for such use is notto be commended, for in both cases the designsalthough faultless as works of art in their origi-nal position, will invarably be found too finelywrought or too delicately
