Description |
English: The paddle steamer Commodore The paddle steamer ‘Commodore’ is shown broadside on. Smoke is shown billowing from her stack and water is shown moving through the paddle wheel of the 1600 ton ship which was built in London in 1834. The advanced technology of the paddle steamer is promoted in this ship’s portrait, in contrast to the other shipping nearby and in the distance, still relying solely on sail. The name ‘Commodore’ is clearly visible on the flag on the main mast. The painting is signed and dated ‘W Clark 1839’. |
