Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe overnight express to Bangkok prepares to leave CM station (14739748482).jpg | A closer look at # 4513, the diesel locomotive of train # 2, the premium overnight express from CM to Bangkok, seen here all set to depart from Chiang Mai. This locomotive is State Railways of Thailand diesel locomotive class 8FA-36C. These engines formed the first batch of arrivals under the Main Line Locomotive Programme. They were initially powered by 'MAN B&W' Diesel engine initially, which were then replaced by Cummins KTTA-50L and later KTA-50L power packs. State Railways of Thailand holds 22 such locomotives, and these were first put on line circa 1993. The Nakhon Phing Special Express, which this engine is hauling, was introduced on 13 April 1987, as the part of Visit Thailand Year 1987 and supplant the Northern Express by the schedule of the old Northern Express (now Special Express 13/14 - introduced on 1 November 1922). It departs Chiang Mai 17:00 (it's just two minutes to 17:00 now) and gets into Bkk around 06:50. The Nakhon Phing Special Express has become a model for Thai Railway services since 2002.
