Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe other railway swing bridge at Bowling Basin - geograph.org.uk - 961128.jpg |
English: The other railway swing bridge at Bowling Basin The well-known major swing bridge over the Forth & Clyde Canal at the entrance to Bowling Basin is just out of the picture to the right, its pivot gearing being housed in an annexe on the side of the nearer white building, housing British Waterways' local offices. But there was a second swing bridge at a lower level south of this, carrying a siding that descended from the embankment of the Caledonian Railway line near Old Kilpatrick to serve the north side of the canal basin and the tidal harbour beyond. The metal block with a U-shaped cut-out in the canal wall was a housing to take a locking bolt when the bridge was across the canal and short lengths of rail can be seen embedded in the setts either side of it. On the nearer side of the canal (invisible in the picture) the bridge's pivot circle and some foundation stones can also be traced. |
