It is the Dwarf Fan Palm of southernEurope where it grows in abundance; it was known to the Romansunder the name P.alma probably on account of a certain resemblanceof its leaves to the hand (palma). Later on the name was adopted forother members of the order until it was employed as the Familyname of this wonderful group of plants. Chamaerops mncrocarpa Juss. is also under cultivation in Hono-lulu ; fine specimens may be seen in Mr. Jordans grounds on Wylliestreet. Phoenix dactylifera L. The Date Palm. Plate III. The Date Palm is usually a stately tree with a tall trunk markedwith the scars of fallen leaves. The leaves are pinnatisect, bearinglinear segments, the lower segments often assuming the appearanceof spines; they are moreover conduplicate at the base, a peculiaritydistinguishing Phoenix from all other genera of palms. The flowersgroW on branched spadices, which appear in the axils of the leavesand are dark vellow and dioecious. In order to make the tree bear Plate IV.

Phot nix dactylifera L. has been cultivated in Asia, Africa, andEurope from time immemorial and it is as yet not known whetnerthe East Indian species Phot nix sylvestris Roxb. is a wild state ofPhot nix dactylifera L. Both of these species occur in Honolulu, butas they are hybridised by insects such a variety of hybrids exist thatit is absolutely impossible to distinguish one from the other. Theother species are in a similar chaos with the exception of Phot nixspinosa Thon. and Phoenix reclinata Jacq. and some botanists donot make any distinction even between these two.
