L, anceps, Limlley.—A remarkably handsome species, andone of the most useful winter-flowering Orchids we have. Ithas oblong compressed somewhat quadrangular pseudobulbsfour or five inches long, oblong lanceolate leaves, generallyin pairs but sometimes solitary, and long two-edged scapesfrom the apex of the pseudobulbs bearing two to five largeshowy flowers three or four inches across, which will last fora month in perfection if kept in a cool dry house ; the sepalsand petals are rose-lilac, the lip a beaatiful deep purple, withthe broad side lobes yellow marked with deep red lines ; the 350 ORCHID-GKOWER S MANUAL. disk has a crest of three yellow ridges. L. aiLCeps alba, Bchb. f.—A remarkably chaste and beautifulvariety, in which the sepals and petals are broad and purewhite as in L. miceps Dawsoni, and the lip also is pure white,with a pale yellow disk. It blossoms in December andJanuary.—Mexico. L. anceps Barkeriana, Lindley. — This is the deepest-coloured variety of L. anceps. The sepals and petals are of L^LIA. 351 a purplish tint of rose colour, and the lip, which is shorterand narrower than in the type, is of an intense magenta-purple with a yellow disk.
