Stierle 156 THE OOLOGIST Recollections of City Bird-Nesting Chicago the fourth city in the worldis in a region which is the naturalbreeding zone of about 135 species ofbirds. Twenty-five years ago Chicagowas about one-fourth its present sizeand much of its present area lay with-out the corporate limits of today.Nevertheless this brief article dealswith a region which, even 25 yearsago, was more urban than rural incharacter. It was in 1889 that a pair of prairiehorned larks displayed a preferencefor a vacant lot, about a half squarein extent, lying within 3 miles of thecity hall and there began to build anest. The boys made use of this lotfor their games of ball and I amafraid that the nest building attemptwas frustrated more than once be-fore the writer found out about thepresence of the birds and sought outtheir nest.
