ith us we have the Horned Larktwelve months in the year. (I refer tothe sub-species, Prairie Horned Lark.)The first nest is sometimes completedas early as February 25th and golfplayers on our public courses in thecity limits have on several occasionscome upon nests early in March con-taining eggs which were in the courseof incubation. Doubtless nearly every one whovisits the haunts of this bird is moreor less familiar with its appearance.It is a large, clean looking speciessome AYz ft. in extent. The young ofthe year have a brown appearance; thebirds of the second year a mottled ormarbled aspect, and the adults of threeor more years are white with pearl-gray backs, a little black on tips ofprimaries, and bill is yellow with ver-milion spot near top of under mandi-ble, while feet are flesh-color and irisis white. It is said that a bird of thisspecies has been known to live 44years. The birds range from Cuba in win-ter to the Arctic in summer. Theyare especially abundant along the NewEngland coast during fall, winter andspring, and a careful observer will notea few during the summer months,which fly down from their southernbreeding limit, in sea
