The Killdeer has interested me forsome time. Although I have knownthe bird since I was a small boy, andhave frequently found them inhabit-ing plowed fields during the nestingseason, it has only been in recentyears that I looked upon my first nest. June 2, 1908, a farmer residing sometwo miles west of town reported hehad found a Killdeers nest contain-ing three eggs. On the morning of theday following I went to the field wherehe was hoeing young corn and heshowed me where to find the nest. Itwas simply a slight depresison besidea hill of corn and was lined with bitsof stone. The three eggs it held werefar advanced in incubation. Bothbirds watched me from a distance butdid not come near June 4, 1909, a farmer telephonedme that he had found a nest and foureggs of the Killdeer in his corn field. THE OOLOQIST 185

She was quitewary, however, and hurried away asI approached. The nest was simply adepression beside a hill of corn. Thefield lay on a hillside, not far above ariver. Thd farmer told me he hadworked all around the nest.^ In April of the following year Ifound another nest of the Killdeerholding three incubated eggs. Thisnest was in a sandy corn field, near alarge creek. In 1913, one night about 8 oclocktowards the middle of April as I wastramping along a public road nearState College, Centre County, Pa., Iheard two Killdeers calling in a lowpasture field down by a creek. A fewdays later I returned to this placeand found the pair of birds still inhab-iting the wet grassy meadow. Theyseemed nervous at my presence, butalthough I stayed there about twohours they showed no signs of havinga nest. In one week I returned
