Title
The obverse of a struck/ hammered silver penny of Edgar, minted by Wulfric in York between AD 973-5.
Description
English: A struck/ hammered silver penny of Edgar (diameter: 19.9mm; thickness: 0.7mm; weight: 1.64g). Of the reform small cross type, this coin was minted by Wulfric in York between AD 973-5, and was struck from the York A style dies. This style was used at York starting a few years before the reform and is of inferior workmanship with a tall and narrow bust. The drapery consists of closely drawn lines and the letter 'A' is barred. The obverse legend usually starts between 9 and 11 o'clock with the king's name spelt EADGAR (Jonsson, 1987, page 93). A small circle is indented on the reverse, but this was not part of the original minting, and is a more recent mark. The coin is slightly worn but in a good condition.
