English: The surface of a glass microsphere (diameter 50 um) under the atomic force microscope (AFM). The 'smooth' surface appears to be rather uneven. An optical microscope was used to acquire an image of the technique (bottom left): an AFM probe scans across the surface of the glass microsphere which is glued onto a seconda AFM cantilever.
