Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe non-malarial tropics 07 (31736169606).jpg | Created in 1906 with the objective of facilitating teaching and research on the botanical resources of the Portuguese colonies, the Jardim Colonial (Colonial Garden), later became known as Jardim do Ultramar Garden of the Overseas Territories) and is now officially called the Jardim Botânico Tropical (Tropical Botanical Garden). It covers an area close to 16 acres (6.4 ha) and contains more than 400 tropical botanical species. It used to be managed by Instituto de Investigação Cientifica Tropical (Institute ofTropical Scientific Research) but this institution was abolished in 2015 by the neo-liberal government that ruled the country then, intent on abolishing everything that could not be privatised. Responsibility for the garden was assigned to the University of Lisbon, who doesn't seem to have much interest in it. It is still a beautiful place, although the decay and neglect are increasingly obvious and heartbreaking. |
