at gentle-man could get them, as he had a strongbelief in the stamina and excellence ofthose so bred. There is no doubt that the breed is stillto be had, but so many Masters of theWelsh hunts have endeavoured to improveby the admixture of English blood that ithas made it extremely difficult to breed thepure ones excepting through continual in-breeding, which is always fatal. It is saidthat the English cross is not to be dependedupon, as sometimes the results of suchalliances have been good working hounds,with the qualities perceptible from bothsides, and in other cases there has been aloss of nose and tongue, and no great advant-age shown in either pace or stamina. Againalso, when a good hound has been obtained,his progeny has been of no use. Very fewEnglish Masters would venture on suchexperiments, and, in fact, they are notwanted, as there are English Foxhoundsin goodly numbers with nose and tongueequal to any Welsh Hound, and they arenaturally better to breed true to their ownkind.
