dshipman Hynson, a promising young officer, who had beenpartially disabled by a bad burn received in firing the Creole a few dayspreviously, was particularly implored to go into the beat. A lad by thename of Nutter jumped out of the boat and offered his place to Hynson,and a man by the name of Powers did the same thing. Hynson refusingboth offers, these men declared that then others might take their places, asthey were resolved to abide in the wreck with him. Hynson and Powerswere drowned. Nutter was saved. When the plunge was made into thesea, Sailing-Master Clemson seized a studding-sail boom, in company withfive of the seamen. Being a swimmer, and perceiving that the boom wasnot sufficiently buoyant to suppport them all, he left it and struck outalone. He perished—the five men were saved. Just about this time the first of the gunboats reached the squadron, andthe young men of the steerage were intensely amused at the smallness of the z m C C/) H O m c 9 CD o > H H> r to O H

Lieutenant Sterrett, in command, said in his least gentlevoice: Sir, there is a gangway to this vessel! Before long even theyoungsters learned to respect these little steamers. Commodore Connernow made an expedition to capture Alvarado, but just as he was about readyto begin a bombardment his pilots predicted a norther, and he hoistedthe signal, Return to the anchorage off Vera Cruz. This was popularlyregarded as a fiasco, but doubtless the Commodore was entirely right, asAlvarado might be taken at any time, and subsequently was taken in amanner which has been a joke in the navy ever since.
