It inhabits the fea-coafts both oF Europe and America, andhas obtained the name of Turnftone from its peculiar method ofturning up the ftones on the fea-fliore by means of its bill, when infearch of the fmaller littoral worms and fifhes on which it feeds. In Britain thefe birds are local, andalmofl confined to the moft re-mote and unfrequented fliores. It occurs at the extremity of the weflernpromontory about Penzance, on the northern fhores of Wales, andin the Hebrides. They build only a flight neft, which is depohtedon the ground, and lay four eggs di an olive colour, fpotted withblack.
