As many kinds of the Duck tribe inhabit the lakes and forefts ofLapland, and other arclic regions, during the breeding feafon, it isdifficult in fome inftances, to diftinguifh the mere differences of fexor age from fpecific diftinctions. The bernacle of which the whitefronted Goofe has been fuppofed the female, were believed abouttwo hundred years to be bred on the coaft of Scotland; but thofe who PLATE CIL who aflerted this, declared alfo, that they were generated out of de-cayed woody or were hatched in the fhell of the Lepas Antifera, amarine production very common in thofe parts. It has feveralmembranous branches or arms, and at the end of each, is fituated amultivalve fhell. The feathered beard of the fifh hanging out of thefhell, were the fuppofed feathers or limbs of the young Tree Geefe,as they were called by the projedors of this whimficai hypothefis. PLATE 105
