are mofs, liverwort, and wool, curioufly in-terwoven, the infide is lined with a thick bed of the fofteft feathers.The neft is not fufpended from a bough as is ufual with fome of thetribe, but is built between the forked branches of low wood, aboutthree feet from the ground : they generally contain from ten to (qvcii-teen or even twenty eggs of greyifh colour, fpeckled with pale red-brown. Thofe birds are moft frequent in gardens and orchards, to whichthey do much injury by devouring the tender (hoots; they arevery active, and fly to and fro with great facility, or run upand down the branches in every direction. The parents and theirolFspring remain together the whole winter, but feparate in thefpring *. The male has more of the rofe colour than the female; in theformer however it is fubjedt to much variation. * The young follow the parents the whole winter ; and from the ilimnefs of theirbodies, and great length of tail, appear, while flying, like fo many darts cutting the air, PLATE
