in other refpecls, except that the colours of the former are more obfcure than in theother fex. Moft authors agree that this is a noify and reftlefs creature, incef-fantly flying from bufli to bum, and always carefully concealing theplace where its neft is depofited ; never alighting on the fame fpot, but creeping to it on the ground in an artful manner. The neft isplaced at the bottom of fome bufh, or under a ftone, and ufually con-tains five or fix eggs, of a pale greenifh colour with marks ofrufous. The PLATE XCII. The trivial Englifh name of this bird has been accounted for byMr. Latham in a very curious manner; he fays, he cannot find itremarked any where for its having any fong. Buffon compares itsnote to the word ouijlraia frequently repeated ; but he has ever thoughtit exactly imitated the clicking of two flones together, one being heldin each hand, If others, fays he, have thought the fame, it willeafily account for the reafon of its being called the Stone-Chaiter, I4 PLATE tfo
