Pennanthas defcribed them as the two fexes of Mergus Merganfer ; and theauthority of Linnaeus may alfo be quoted to fanction this opinion.Yet Latham has endeavoured to prove, by the mod fatisfactoryexperiments, that they are diftin£t fpecies, and that Mergus Cafior isonly a variety of the Dun-Diver.
