ful Bird before us. This fpecies is a native of Africa, particularly of the Cape ofGood Hope: from the latter place vaft numbers have been broughtto this country ; and the climate favouring their increafe, the kind isnot uncommon in many parts of the kingdom. It is rather an or-namental than ufeful fpecies, and is generally kept in Gentlemensponds for pleafure. Albin publifhed a figure and defcription of this Bird from a fpeci-men reared in this country fixty years ago: he fays it fed on grafsand corn like other Geefe, and thus concludes his obfervations on thetwo fexes, The difference between the cock and hen could notbe diftinguifhed neither by the colours or fhape, but only by thecocks running to the hen with open wings, clafping or embracingher round with them. I could not find any other name for themfrom the Poulterers but that of Ganfer. This bird comes neareft toMr. Willoughby s Gambo Goofe, the fpan in the wings excepted, page360. tab. 7I.—Vide Albin. voL ii. p, 84, PLATE ;4
