The male bird is figured in Plate LXXXVIL of this Work ; thefemale differs from the male chiefly in the colour and markings onthe breaft, that part in the male being entirely white, in the female ofa warm duiky tint with numerous trailfverfe femicircular pale brownlines or fcallops difpofed in a pretty regular manner over the wholeof the throat, breaft, fides., and belly. It is fome years fince we defcribed the male of this fpecies: wethen mentioned it as a rare bird, nor has later information leffenedthe accuracy of this remark : within the fpace of many years not morethan three or four fpecirnens, and thofe all males, are recorded tohave appeared in England. The female is far more rare than themale. As this bird has appeared on the eaftern coafts of Britain in thewinter, it is conjectured they have ftraggled hither in their migra-tions from the north (where they occur in fummer)to the more foutherq regions, where they pafe the winter.
