The Hooded Crow is not uncommon during winter in many-parts of England. With us it is a bird of paflage. In thofe coun-tries where it breeds, it retreats to the mountains for that time,and defcends into the plains as the winter approaches. In manyparts of Scotland it is the only fpecies of crow known, and inthe northern iflands and mountains, it is laid to remain the wholeyear. Like the rook and crow, this Bird feeds on carrion and the offalsof animals; and alfo on fhell-fifh, which they find on the banksof rivers; at other times, on feeds and grain, and mountain-berries.They are more elegant and varied in their plumage than thecommon crow, but not l.efs mifehievous to young birds, or any wounded PLATE CXVII. wounded or defencelefs animals.
