Steel brought trout fry from a ranch fifty miles away, but no fish were seen inthe lake for more thana dozen years. Then afew were taken, one ofwhich was fully thirtyinches long. Since then trout havebeen taken in ever-increasing numbers.They are best caughtby fly casting from theshore. For this reasonthe fishing is not alwaysthe easiest. Often theslopes are not propitiousfor casting. One hasto climb upon outlyingrocks to reach thewaters of best depth.But the results usuallyjustify the effort. Thetrout range from one toten pounds in weight.Anglers of experience inwestern fishing testifythat, pound for pound,the rainbow trout takenin the cold deep watersof Crater Lake are thehardest-fighting troutof all.
