sand feet, andClouds Rest six thousand feet! Andamong them, the waterfalls! Even the weather appears impossi-ble; the summers are warm, but not toowarm; dry, but not too dry; the nightscold and marvelously starry. A few miles away are the Big Trees,not the greatest groves nor the greatesttrees, for those are in the Sequoia Na-tional Park, a hundred miles south, butthree groves containing monsters which,next to Sequoias, are the hugest and theoldest living things. Of these the GrizzlyGiant is king—whose diameter is nearlythirty feet, whose girth is over ninety-nine, and whose height is more than twohundred. Their presence commands thesilence due to worship. Winter is becoming a feature in thelife of the Valley. Hotels are open toaccommodate an increasing flow of vis-itors. The falls are still and frozen, thetrees laden with snowy burdens. Thegreens have vanished; the winter sunshines upon a glory of gray and white. Winter sports are rapidly becomingpopular on the floor of the Valley.
