A vertical section of the upper portiou of the culvert at Seleucia Iieria, as surveyed by Capt. W. Allen, H.N. OF SELFATCIA PIERIA. 123 surface of the hill, and was thus made to supply the town withwater. The cutting between the tunnels is 88 yards long, openat the top; and, according to Captain Allens survey, a verticalsection of it at the upper end measures 150 feet, and it gradu-ally declines to 75 feet, where the second tunnel commences.

Thesecond tunnel is like the first, but only 45 yards long; an opencutting is then continued to the end of the culvert. A verticalsection gives 50 feet at the upper end, and it declines gradually,according to the undulations of the hill. The tunnels onlyhave the channel in the middle. This, together with the ledgesleft on either side of it, afforded facilities for clearing awayholders, stones, detritus, etc., which would otherwise have col- 124 ON THE ANCIENT CITY AND PORT lectecl; and it is remarkable that, although the culvert hasbeen totally neglected for ages, the tunnels have not becomeobstructed ; which Captain Allen thinks may be accounted forby the fact of the stream finding an exit by the gap in the greatwall.
