That these places may be more easily referred to on the map,I have arranged them according to their position, from east to west; and haveinterspersed the text with notices, in a smaller type, of ruins described by otherauthors. X Capt. Spratt, Admiralty Chart. § Stad. Magni Maris, Cretse Perip. 11 MS. No. 11, p. 76. THE ANTIQUITIES OF CANDIA. NO. I. 269 AMPELUS. (A Hellenic ruin is shown at this place (Capo Xacro) on the Admiraltychart.* ARADUs, Insula. On the island Cufonissa, which I suppose to be Aradus, Capt. Spratt showsthe ruins of a Roman town on its northern shore, Avith a line of cisterns andconduits towards the centre of the island. On the south side he designates Hellenic foundations and a statue.f Petra. At this place, some Cyclopean walls are shown on the Admiralty chart.) PRAESOS.

From Mionnet. In the British Museum. This city still retains its name. It is situated eight milessouth of Settia., on the slopes of Mount Dicta. Its ruins are seenon a hill, comprising many houses, and other edifices, columns,and slabs of marble. % (It contained a temple to Jupiter Dictaus.^ ASOS. The ruins of this town may be discerned at Leopetro, on amountain on the north coast, the face of which towards the seais very bold and rocky, so that its ascent is only practicablefrom the land side. (A most ancient temple to Jupiter Asius existed here.;; The town is placedby Pliny among the inland cities.) * Capt. Spratt, Admh-alty Chart, 1851. t Id. X On the slopes of Mount Dicta, towards Settia, Bondelmonte observed twoancient sites, which he attributed to Camara and Olus. Some marble ruinsexisted at the former place; and the latter city he describes as a very strongfortress, high tip among the mountains.
