EXCAVATED UNDER PERSONAL SUPERINTENDENCE. 77 a pedum in his left hand, and shielding his face from the sunwith his right; but as there is the fragment of a pedestalbehind, which must have supported sometlimg, it is possiblethat the Faun held a goat over his shoulders, and what appearsto be a portion of a pedum may be the hind leg of an animal.In his right he may have held one of the fore legs, the otherof which rested on his right shoulder, where a slight oxidationis visible, as if cramped with iron ; and lastly, the other legrested on the pedestal. Around the piscina are other fanciful devices serving as orna-ments, as a panther eating grapes, in front of last group; on 78 RErORT ON A HOUSE AT ROMrEIl; each side of which are Cupids riding on dolphins, which arefeeding on polypi; two toads (?) beliind; then two birds ; a cowand a hind on right, and a goose on the left; all of ordinaryexecution. The two statues on left of piscina are pretty indesign ; but the hernial statues only are of a good style of art.As the level of the garden rises rapidly, a gutter is practised infront next the tablmum. The side walks of garden are of opussigninum; the back walk is of black stucco, with fragments ofwhite marble. We generally find a lararium in the garden orperistyle, as m the atrium; but though there is no altar orniche of construction, a small terra cotta altar, with a statue ofISIinerva, of the same material, were found here, a
