has a round ball in the center, fromwhich start out two arms. These arms or points wereevidently intended to be of the same length. A flaw inthe stone caused the workman to shorten one arm, andthus bring it to a point, not abruptly, but by a gradualtaper. Several of these have been found in the State.Their use is unknown. AVe have an excellent illustration of five varieties ofbadges in Fig. 45, composed of striped green slate.They were found in Liberty and Lemon Townships. Inthe upper right hand corner we have the butter-fly badge.Opposite it is a double crescent with the bore throughthe center. Some have maintained that the doublecrescent was used by the individual who ranked higherthan the one who wore the single crescent. The doublecrescent, in the center of the picture, is supposed to havebeen worn by persons of the highest rank. Howevertrue this may be no one knows. Two other badges aregiven in the lower part of the picture. These illustrations do not represent all the varieties
