Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe most famous cranes in Belfast - geograph.org.uk - 1451393.jpg |
English: The most famous cranes in Belfast. Twin gantry cranes situated over the Harland and Wolff Building Dock at Queen's Island, Belfast, nicknamed 'Samson' and 'Goliath' (nearest). The cranes were constructed by the German engineering firm Krupp, with Goliath being completed in 1969 and Samson in 1974. Goliath stands 96m tall, while Samson is taller at 106m. The cranes are towering over an enormous steel construction (jacket substructure), part an offshore transformer platform (BARD 1) destined for an offshore windfarm off north-western Germany, that has just been built in the yard.
For the record, the view here is from the Musgrave Channel Road. Normally closed to the public, this has temporarily opened as traffic through Queen's Island has been diverted due to the filming of multi-million dollar Hollywood blockbuster 'Your Highness' inside the old Paint Hall 511608. |
