West,Newman chromo Typical Rotifers 793 APPENDIX TO CHAPTER XIII THE preparation and preservation of Rotifers well extended as in life toserve as type specimens is now possible, and the following is an outline ofMr. C. F. Rousselets method, which consists of three stages: narcotising, killing and fixing, and preserving. The whole operation is necessarilyperformed under a dissecting microscope. The first step in the preparation of Rotifers is to isolate the animalsby transferring as many as may be available by means of a veryfine pipette to a fresh watchglass full of perfectly clean water until all((articles of foreign matter have been eliminated. This is necessarybecause when the animals are dead these particles adhere to the cilia ofthe Rotifers, from whence it is very difficult to remove them. In the caseof fixed Rotifers, such as Melicerta, Lirnnias, Stephanoceros, &c., it isnecessary to cut off and trim a very small piece of the plant to whichthey are attached ready for mountin
