Ross at an early period worked out a Lister form, ofmicroscope, with the limb supporting the body-tube. He applied afine adjustment in this to act upon the nose-piece only, which, aswe shall subsequently see, is a very interior method. This instru-ment dates from 1839, and is shown in fig. 120. Ross triedvarious modifications of this fine adjustment and model, but fromabout 1843 he worked only at the lever method as applied to thenose-piece through the cross arm and brought it to a relativelyhigh state of perfection. But the full possibilities of this method,as concerned its sensitiveness, were never utilised by Ross, and itwas Hugh Powell who first published an account of his long level-fine adjustment in the London Physiological Journal, November1843. The published account of Rosss long lever fine adjustmentdid not appear until a month later, viz. December 1843. In 1835 Powell made a microscope with an extremely delicatefine adjustment applied to the stage. The mechanism and theworkmanship were excellent (we give a drawing of a later form ofthe instrument at fig. 121), and this fine adjustment is one of theslowest and steadiest as yet made. In one
